Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Large Smelts Baked with Bok Choy and Mushrooms
Contains: Seafood (fish), nightshades (seasoning). Is: Quick and easy. My camera’s battery is about dead, and the charger has gone on walkabout, so I’ve chosen to find an old recipe I made back in 2007 and recorded elsewhere. I was … Continue reading
Chinese Stir-Fried Chicken Hearts with Shiitake and Vegetables (Chicken Thigh Option)
Contains: Offal, nightshades, legumes (soy), a small amount of alcohol. Is: Quick and Easy, can be made gluten-free, paleo. You can add in gizzards and even liver to this should you care to. (Personally, I’d go for gizzards, chopped up, … Continue reading
Taiwanese Pork Rice Bowl: Lu Rou Fan

Sous Vide Lamb Shoulder Chop, with Sweet Potatoes and Mushrooms
Contains: Dairy, nightshade spice. Is: Wheat/gluten-free, primal. Made for the June 6th online Culinary Meet-Up. I really wish I could share!!! (And taste everyone else’s food in return!) The concept behind this particular Meet-Up was to focus once again … Continue reading
Thai-Inspired Red Curry with Leafy Greens & Scallops
Contains: Coconut, nightshades, seafood. Is: Gluten-free. Vegetarian/vegan option. After scoring a big batch of pak choy (a variant of bok choy, but with a whiter stem) I decided to make a Thai curry. It’s not quite Paleo or Whole30, but … Continue reading
Korean Banchan: Pickled Tofu
Contains: Soy. Is: Gluten-free, vegan. The Korean people typically serve lots of small sides along their main course, and along with rice. These they call banchan. Now, typically I make one or two dishes for a meal, especially if … Continue reading
Sea Scallops, Shrimp, Shiitake, Sprouts, Asparagus, Onion – Stir Fried
Winter Solstice is a big deal around here, raising hens. From henceforth, there will be more daylight each day, until one gets to the point where the chickens notice, and will up the production line. (Yes, one can keep lights … Continue reading
April 1st: Mashed Sweet Green Peas with Shiitake
This is actually created in memory of the time when I was a child. I looked at the platter of loathed green peas, and, using the logic of the Laws of Similarity, decided that mashing my peas might improve the … Continue reading
Fresh Sardines and Salad – A Meal
Fresh sardines are nothing like the oily, salty things that come out of a tin (although there is a place for tinned sardines — more as an accent to salads, and perhaps, like anchovies, to pizza. Or, as a protein … Continue reading
Slow Cooked Lamb Shank
I know, I know, I haven’t been active in a bit — nothing really came together to post about, and at least one dish turned out to be an Epic Fail. And another I forgot about taking photos… Anyhow, … Continue reading
