Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Large Smelts Baked with Bok Choy and Mushrooms
Contains: Seafood (fish), nightshades (seasoning). Is: Quick and easy. My camera’s battery is about dead, and the charger has gone on walkabout, so I’ve chosen to find an old recipe I made back in 2007 and recorded elsewhere. I was … Continue reading
Thai-Inspired Red Curry with Leafy Greens & Scallops
Contains: Coconut, nightshades, seafood. Is: Gluten-free. Vegetarian/vegan option. After scoring a big batch of pak choy (a variant of bok choy, but with a whiter stem) I decided to make a Thai curry. It’s not quite Paleo or Whole30, but … Continue reading
Lightly Seared Yellowfin Tuna with Farro and Greens
Contains: Seafood, gluten, grains, soy. Is: Quick and easy. The first time I ate farro, surprisingly enough, was at one of our book club meetings, which that evening had been held at Brio’s in Danbury CT. I didn’t expect to … Continue reading
Squid, Veggie and Miso Egg Drop Soup
Contains: Seafood, soy, legumes, nightshades. Is: Gluten-free, grain-free, quick and easy. I’ve finally got into MOVING the rest of my old home into my new home. (Which seriously involved sorting out stuff that I’d rather not move up here, … Continue reading
Veggie Breakfast or Brunch Scramble
My goal is to have veggies at every meal; I’m not quite there yet, and I’m not counting the high glycemic index ones such as white potatoes (PS, keeping the skin on does NOT make them healthier, especially with Russets) … Continue reading
Lion’s Mane Mushroom Stir Fry – Gluten-Free and Vegan
About 3-4 weeks ago, I ran into something named Lion’s Mane mushroom at the Litchfield CT farmer’s market. The taste is supposed to resemble crab meat. YAY WOW, something NEW I’ve never tried before! Sussed isn’t quite the word! I … Continue reading
Easter: Leek and Rosemary Lamb Shanks, with Bok Choy
And note that Easter actually falls on April Fool’s Day this year… A leg of lamb is a good solid traditional feast for omnivores at Easter, although many will vouch for a good smoked ham. (Dad, of course, would always … Continue reading
Skirt Steak Stir Fry Featuring Persimmon
I discovered a new fruit the other day. The persimmon ( Diospyros sp.) is alleged to taste like apricot; I find it similar but not identical. And I like it better. Much better, so much that I am now plotting to buy my own … Continue reading
Korean Bok Choy Salad
Two of the three most recent cook books to cross my threshold have been: Maangchi, Real Korean Cooking: Authentic Dishes for the Home Cook (2015) Russ Crandall, Paleo Take Out: Restaurant Favorites without the Junk (2015) (The third was a seafood … Continue reading
Homesteading in June, Here at Zone 5
Animal, Mineral and Vegetable…. Four-legged friends: At the moment, there’s just Serenity the 19 and a half year old ragdoll cat. It is not fair to her to bring in another cat (although she has a history of getting along … Continue reading →
