Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Onion and Olive Frittata
Contains: Dairy, eggs, nightshades (pimentos). Is: Gluten-free. Makes for a fine brunch. Adapted from Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street, 2017 (September-October, page 10), which in turn comes from Deborah Madison. My changes are in halving the recipe and, well, adding olives. … Continue reading
Mardi Gras Creole: Mussels, Andouille, Okra, Rice
For Mardi Gras (February 13, 2018). So many seasonal times up-and-coming! And my computer being on the fritz hasn’t helped much… yesterday’s Valentine’s salad was supposed to be posted this past Tuesday, and today’s Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) post … Continue reading
Khatta Meat
Made for the March Northern Curry Recipe Challenge, over at Lina’s. I do love these challenges, for the new tastes I get to try. The non-veggie arm of the judging is being performed by Sandhya, of Indfused. The veggie dishes … Continue reading
Okra, Mediterranean Style
Okay, I LOVE okra. I got a pound of it at my farmer’ market ten days ago, and another pound this past weekend. This stuff is FRESH! It will last a lot better and longer than the okra I see … Continue reading
Scalloped Potatoes Au Gratin with Onions and Cabbage
I’ve been wanting to make this for a while – the last time I tried I ended up nearly slicing off a finger tip using the mandoline without the finger guard, and forgot about making the recipe as I’d planned. … Continue reading
Bluefish with Plum & Onion Sauce, Skillet
I’ve been away for a week — six days spent vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, and another evening/night spent on the western side of Massachusetts. You’d think, after the Vineyard, I’d be tired of seafood… Nah. I’ve cooked bluefish twice before for … Continue reading
Pork Chops with Apple & Onion – Simple!
I love good pork chops, and I saw a video where Civilized Caveman made these, and since I didn’t write anything down, this is my own take on what he did. Serves 2 (although in my case I kept eating … Continue reading
The Soup’s the Thing
Two vegetarian soups from that recipe swap thing I do on Recipezaar/Food.com. I do love a good soup, and although I’m avoiding cream-based soups at the moment (weight control and health), the one depicted above doesn’t contain much. First up, … Continue reading

Homesteading: Evaluating This Year’s Veggie Successes and Failures; Planning for Next Year
Raised Beds: Potatoes: A marked success. We will use more Yukon seed potatoes next year. I can purchase in a local store, although perhaps I will have some seed potatoes from this year? Cucumbers: They grew well here, but I … Continue reading →
