Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Bell Pepper Boats: Scallops, Bacon, Tomato, Quail Egg, Ikura (Salmon Eggs)
Contains: Seafood, eggs. Is: Whole30, paleo. You can consider this a sit-down appetizer, or perhaps a side for a fairly fancy meal. The recipe description is per person, simply multiply for more. This was a rather fun delight to create, … Continue reading
Rotkohl: German Red Cabbage
Contains: Alcohol, no standard allergens. Is: Gluten-free., one-pot cooking. Ah, home-grown red cabbage! (And, onion…) Unfortunately, the red color gets lost with extended cooking! The inspiration recipe – I have to say I modified this just enough that you have … Continue reading
Avocado Deviled Eggs, Redux: Avocado & Bacon
Contains: Eggs, nightshade. Is: An appetizer. I brought these to a recent gathering. You can always use hotter ground pepper than I did, but I was considering the audience. (You could also experiment with a hot or smoky ground paprika.) … Continue reading
Savory Bacon and Cheese-Infused Muffins with Cricket Flour
Contains: Crickets, insects. If allergic to shellfish, avoid. Added sugar, wheat, gluten, dairy. Is: My first ever cricket dish. As someone who tries (nearly) everything once, I decided to try insects. My previous experience voluntarily eating insects (swallowing gnats outdoors … Continue reading
Breakfast: Greens, Bacon, Egg
Contains: Eggs. Is: Quick and easy. Potentially Paleo (depending on the bacon). For the greens, I used Swiss chard, which I’d obtained form Misfits Market. I also had “second breakfast” of half a small Misfits Market grapefruit. (These seem to … Continue reading
Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato (BLT) Salad
Contains: Nightshades, egg. Is: Quick and easy, gluten-free, grain-free, potentially Paleo, Whole30 (depending on the bacon). It’s the LAST of the real tomatoes of the season, at least in my region. I picked a couple up at a local farm … Continue reading
German Potato Salad
Contains: Nightshades (you can omit the paprika), eggs. Is: Paleo, Whole30 (if properly-sourced bacon), dairy-free. This is fairly authentic. I did not use red potatoes exclusively, but there’s also no mayonnaise in here. I added celery for crunch. The ideal … Continue reading
Deviled Eggs: Balsamic Bacon
Contains: Eggs. Is: Paleo, Whole 30 (depending on bacon source). Recently (well, back in late July), for a picnic, I made deviled eggs. Hard-cooked 18 of them (the hens out back have been prolific), and brought three different recipes … Continue reading
“Grilled” Brie, Jam, Bacon, Jalapeño on Sourdough Toast
Contains: Gluten, grains, dairy, nightshades, added sugars. Is: An admitted splurge. There’s a restaurant in Bernardston, Massachusetts, The Farm Table. Everything (that possibly can be) is sourced locally, from individual farms, all credited on the menu. We went here back … Continue reading
Soul Food for New Years: Black Eyed Peas and Collards Soup/Stew
(I am posting two New Year’s recipes today. The earlier, the trotters, was actually made last August. The black eyed pea and collard soup was made yesterday, and is following that earlier recipe within a few hours. And, here it … Continue reading
