Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Spring Homesteading Plans, 2021
Or, The Annals of Future Food! We had six inches of snow by late morning, Friday 4/16. Most melted by Saturday; it was all gone by Sunday morning. It is the time of year that if and when it does … Continue reading
Homesteading: Chickens and Quail, Updates and Coop Life
Life is moving along with regards to both the chicken and the quail. Most of this post is about cooping them, along with adorable poultry photos…. Chickens: The main (first) coop now has five hens and one rooster. The rooster … Continue reading
The Quail Have Started to Lay! Plus, How Quail Differ from Chickens
New Homestead Developments! As of this morning, July 21st, I have a total of 4 quail eggs. Produced by my in-house Coturnix! Apparently I have at least two or three females and at least one male. There are seven mature … Continue reading
What’s Growing on the Homestead Today?
The photos here were taken May 8th (other than the 2-day old quail photo). Overnight … rain, then snow (again). But I’m enjoying the thoughts of new life and new growth, both vegetative and avian. (And, personal…) Trees are thinking … Continue reading
Raising Chickens Part VI: Feeding Those Layers
Here, we are only dealing with feed for adult laying chickens. (If you have an associated rooster, who is obviously NOT going to be laying a thing, he’s fine eating his harem’s food.) It is possible during the non winter … Continue reading
I’m a Chicken Grandma!
No, no. I’m not chicken to BECOME a grandmother, I’ve simply seen that one of my hens has hatched her first egg into a live chick format! Yes, Idril’s first chick has hatched! Now, Idril had gone broody … Continue reading
Raising Chickens, Part V: The Bin, or Storage at Your Coop
Like me, you may well have a bin for chicken supplies. Or, you may be keeping your chickens in a more barn-style coop, where you can have a dedicated storage room or at the least, a high storage shelf or … Continue reading
Homesteading: Farm and Garden, May 2022. Zone 5.
Yesterday the temperature outside climbed to 88 F, and rather humid. The sort of weather that reinforces my decision not to follow my brother and his family down to the Tampa area of Florida. I know this is nothing to … Continue reading →
