Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

A Vegetarian Breakfast “Quesadilla”
Contains: Dairy, wheat, gluten, potentially nightshades. Is: Quick and easy, vegetarian. A quick one-off breakfast from yesterday. It isn’t even particularly Tex-Mex, but at least this has queso (cheese). And for this I had Mexican cheese in the fridge… Another … Continue reading
Vegetarian Breakfast Wrap: with Brussels Sprouts, Red Onion, Spinach, Egg and Cheese
Contains: Egg, wheat, gluten, dairy, nightshades. Is: Quick and easy, vegetarian. Apologies for missing some of the posts I want to make recently. I twisted my ankle which has meant I don’t want to stand there and make some of … Continue reading
Roasted Kohlrabi & Brussels Sprouts with Valais Cheese
Contains: Dairy, nightshades (seasoning only). Is: Vegetarian. Recipe concept sourced from: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/roasted-kohlrabi-with-parmesan-3561919. I made some minor changes, but enough to say it is no longer that cook’s recipe. I had neither Parmesans nor parsley, so you are instead reading my … Continue reading
Warm GF Cauliflower-Based Quesadilla-Style Sandies with Clams, Leek, Sprouts and Cheese
Contains: Shellfish. dairy, optional nightshade. Is: Gluten-free, nut-free, quick and easy. These wraps look intriguing; I like cauliflower, and I do know people who need to be gluten-free, for whom I appreciate the honor to cook. What’s not to like … Continue reading
Wisconsin Style Beer Cheese Dip

Mahi Mahi with Sweet Potato, Avocado, Onion, Cheese, Cucumber and Cilantro Chutney in White Corn Tortilla Shells
Contains: Seafood, nightshades, dairy. Potential soy. Is: Gluten-free. (The soy would be in the coriander chutney I used. Other savory chutneys could be substituted, or you could make your own – something I plan to challenge myself with this coming … Continue reading
Open Face English Muffin Cheese Melt, with Seared Tuna, Avocado, Pickled Ginger, and Brie Cheese
Contains: Seafood (fish), wheat (gluten), dairy. Is: Quick and easy. This one is Japanese-inspired, but fusion with my take on this. You can consider this a Good Friday dish. Yes, the pickled ginger was leftover from a Japanese-restaurant take-out. Note, … Continue reading
Savory Bacon and Cheese-Infused Muffins with Cricket Flour
Contains: Crickets, insects. If allergic to shellfish, avoid. Added sugar, wheat, gluten, dairy. Is: My first ever cricket dish. As someone who tries (nearly) everything once, I decided to try insects. My previous experience voluntarily eating insects (swallowing gnats outdoors … Continue reading
Dad’s Eggplant (Aubergine) Pizzas
Contains: Dairy, nightshades. Is: Gluten-free, vegetarian, paleo, not truly Italian but inspired, and something good we grew up with. You can make this an omnivore dish by adding in some ground beef, or perhaps pepperoni slices. They’re not essential, and … Continue reading
Cheesy Grits Casserole – Inspired by a Kentucky Grandmother
Contains: Grains, dairy, nightshade seasonings. Is: Gluten-free, filled with an ancestral touch, has a vegetarian option. My paternal grandmother passed away late winter of 1983. The dish I remember most of hers (and she had several old South recipes) was … Continue reading
