Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Fennel, Apple and Juniper Mahi-Mahi
Contains: Fish, alcohol. Is: Gluten-free. The alcohol will cook off, but a word to the wise that this is there. This is a poached dish, after a bit of pan frying. Mahi mahi (dorado, common dolphinfish) – Coryphaena hippurus. The fish … Continue reading
Fresh Apple & Plum Buttermilk Upside Down Cake
Contains: Dairy products. Is: Vegetarian, a dessert. A lot of the upside down cakes are made using canned fruits. It is (the tail end of) fresh fruit season here, so I decided to use fresh apple and fresh plum that … Continue reading
Sous Vide Bone-In Pork Loin Roast Plus Apple-Mustard-Drippings Sauce
Is: Gluten-free, grain free, Whole30, paleo, nightshade-free. Yes, I know I said I’d use today to put in two more Greek recipes, but I fear they’re not quite ready for uploading at the moment, so I moved something I’d set … Continue reading
Father’s Day: Stuffed Lamb Heart, Featuring Apple & Onion (Omnivorian)
Contains: Offal. Some nightshade in the ras al hanout. Is: Whole30, Paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free. For a vegetarian or vegan rendition using the same stuffing, but adding the stuffing into bell peppers, see this recipe… Apparently I really like stuffing food … Continue reading
Father’s Day: Stuffed Pepper, Featuring Apple & Onion (Vegan)
Contains: Nightshades. Is: Whole30, Paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan. While I got most of my loving for those “odd bits” from Dad, he never shied away from his vegetables. I think he’d enjoy the spirit behind this recipe, as well … Continue reading
Lamb Shoulder Chop with Cabbage, Apple, and Onion
‘Tis the season for all sorts of holidays, and right now if you are Jewish it is Hanukkah. So, I decided to post something that would be Hanukkah friendly (ie, it would be kosher). It also sounds a bit Irish, … Continue reading
Squid Stuffed With Seafood (and Some Veggies)
I like food challenges, as long as they’re not of the ilk of “Combine Ritz crackers with Marshmallow Fluff and hazelnuts, and show us your dish”, which is what a lot of Chopped seems to be. Indeed, I like to … Continue reading
Kale, Apple, Pear, Onion, Brussels Sprouts, Squash Casserole
Vegan and Gluten-Free. I apologize for the lack of a photo of the finished meal – just haven’t been myself lately. Too many things on my plate, and I’m not talking supper. This was prepared for a potluck this past … Continue reading
Thanksgiving: Stuffed Delicata Squash
I’m home alone this Thanksgiving, and I was supposed to go to a Post-Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday, but I’m not doing that, either. I’ve broken my tibia, and cannot drive, and to be honest, most homes aren’t really handicapped … Continue reading
Pork Meat Loaf with Cauliflower, Apple and Fennel
Pork and apples… Apples and pork… There’s a theme going on here, and fennel also goes well with pork, just as rosemary partners well with lamb. And, I’ve discovered I LIKE meatloaf — if one leaves out the breadstuffs and grains! … Continue reading
