Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Fennel, Apple and Juniper Mahi-Mahi
Contains: Fish, alcohol. Is: Gluten-free. The alcohol will cook off, but a word to the wise that this is there. This is a poached dish, after a bit of pan frying. Mahi mahi (dorado, common dolphinfish) – Coryphaena hippurus. The fish … Continue reading
Arctic Char with Sesame Wafu Dressing, Lime, and Cream Cheese
Contains: Seafood, dairy, potentially soy. Is: Gluten-free, nightshade-free, simple and easy. This recipe uses leftover Japanese wafu dressing from the earlier Japanese salad and dressings blog post. As noted there, if you switch out the soy sauce/tamari for coconut … Continue reading
Asian Steamed Fish with Cabbage and Mushrooms
In lieu of an Asian bamboo steamer, I used my large Caphalon pot that is oven-safe. For those who’d like to know: this recipe is both gluten-free and soy-free. Today in New York City (and presumably elsewhere), Chinatown is throwing … Continue reading
Figs and Omnivorous Dining – A snack (Figs Wrapped in Prosciutto) and a main (Whole Fish Stuffed with Figs)
I just love these figs! The fresher, the better! Before fig season leaves us in the dust, I figure I better post these two! For our snack, we have figs wrapped with prosciutto. For our main, we have striped black … Continue reading
Whole Trout, Japanese Hot Pot Style
Whole Fish Hot Pot I started writing this up about four months ago, and with one thing and another — mainly getting around to optimizing the photos as much as possible, as well as finding the time — this didn’t … Continue reading
Simple Arctic Char, Take Two
Good day — it is lovely outside, just my type of weather (seventies). I don’t find this fish often enough, but Arctic char is indeed one of my favorites. It is so simple to prepare (as is the best of … Continue reading
Another Seafood Soup
I meant to post this awhile ago but got busy in real life (yes, I have one, and it doesn’t just involve food… well, not always.) I love making homemade soups. I’ve been loving making seafood soups ever since last … Continue reading
Seafood Soup
Yes, made this for lunch yesterday, and a rating of 5 out of 5, and a photo or two will be manhandled into the post later today: (But for some reason, WordPress seems to be unable to view the existing … Continue reading
Fluke Redux
The first fluke fillet was dealt with in a cooking episode as listed below. Now, we go raw. I thawed the strip out, and before it was completely thawed, sliced it as thinly as possible, coming into the flesh at … Continue reading
