Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

A Vegetarian Breakfast “Quesadilla”
Contains: Dairy, wheat, gluten, potentially nightshades. Is: Quick and easy, vegetarian. A quick one-off breakfast from yesterday. It isn’t even particularly Tex-Mex, but at least this has queso (cheese). And for this I had Mexican cheese in the fridge… Another … Continue reading
Tomagoyaki: A Japanese Rolled Omelet (Dashimaki Variant)
Contains: Eggs (natch….), soy, seafood option, added sugar. Is: A great appetizer, or bento-box ready addition. FEATURING: Home Grown Eggs! (And, scallion/green onion). This recipe is derived from https://www.justonecookbook.com/tamagoyaki-japanese-rolled-omelette/, and I have taken the liberty of adding chopped scallops to … Continue reading
Prepping to Sell or Donate Home Grown Chicken Eggs
(This is the full and complete version of this blog post. It was uploaded as incomplete this past Tuesday by accident.) These are my personal guidelines that I follow for donation or sale of extra chicken eggs from my back … Continue reading
Onion and Olive Frittata
Contains: Dairy, eggs, nightshades (pimentos). Is: Gluten-free. Makes for a fine brunch. Adapted from Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street, 2017 (September-October, page 10), which in turn comes from Deborah Madison. My changes are in halving the recipe and, well, adding olives. … Continue reading
Breakfast: Greens, Bacon, Egg
Contains: Eggs. Is: Quick and easy. Potentially Paleo (depending on the bacon). For the greens, I used Swiss chard, which I’d obtained form Misfits Market. I also had “second breakfast” of half a small Misfits Market grapefruit. (These seem to … Continue reading
Greek Omelet with Spinach and Olives
Contains: Eggs, dairy. Is: Quick and easy, simple vegetarian option, nightshade-free. The Second Recipe of a personal Greek Month. You can eat this by itself, or have a side of toasted pita and/or Greek salad. See the previous recipe … Continue reading
Vegetarian Avocado Omelet
Contains: Eggs, dairy, potentially nightshade. Is: Vegetarian, potentially Paleo / Whole30 if cheese is omitted. As you may recall, I made guacamole two weeks ago, and shortly prior I posted a review of a restaurant that I featured as my … Continue reading
Veggie Breakfast or Brunch Scramble
My goal is to have veggies at every meal; I’m not quite there yet, and I’m not counting the high glycemic index ones such as white potatoes (PS, keeping the skin on does NOT make them healthier, especially with Russets) … Continue reading
Breakfast: Refried Beans and First-Fried Egg
I held a Cinco de Mayo dinner back on May 5th, and we had a great time, and all together too much food. The vegetarian chili was a big hit, and some of it went home with omnivores. I plan … Continue reading
Homesteading: About Those Winter-Frozen Eggs!
For those of us who live in higher latitudes, or up in mountains, one feature of life is a few eggs we can’t collect from our coops in time that freeze. Typically, they will exhibit a wide crack down the … Continue reading →
