Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Ox Tongue Steaks, Japanese Style (from Beef or Bison)
Contains: Offal, soy (legumes). Is: Japanese, gluten-free, with the proper soy sauce, can be Paleo/Whole 30, if using coconut aminos. It has been a while since I’ve posted anything offally-inclined. But here we are, once again, in the waste-not, want-not … Continue reading
Tomagoyaki: A Japanese Rolled Omelet (Dashimaki Variant)
Contains: Eggs (natch….), soy, seafood option, added sugar. Is: A great appetizer, or bento-box ready addition. FEATURING: Home Grown Eggs! (And, scallion/green onion). This recipe is derived from https://www.justonecookbook.com/tamagoyaki-japanese-rolled-omelette/, and I have taken the liberty of adding chopped scallops to … Continue reading
Japanese Miso Dressing with Duck Breast
Contains: Soy (potentially gluten), added sugar. Is: Quick and easy, just ducky… A continuation of my Asian Cooking Month! If you are gluten-free, read your miso container label. There are indeed some that contain no wheat (gluten). Duck is not … Continue reading
Breakfast in Japan: Oyakodon
Contains: Eggs, soy, potential gluten, potential alcohol. J. Kenji Alt-Lopez is making home cooking videos these days. He does these POV style with a Go-Pro mounted on his forehead, so you see what he sees. Editing is minimal, but the … Continue reading
Salmon Tartare (Dad’s Recipe)
Contains: Seafood, nightshades. Is: Paleo, Whole30, gluten-free, if you leave out or modify any crackers, of which I certainly never minded doing. Is: An appetizer. This is perfect for an item in your Feast of the Seven Fishes, an Italian … Continue reading
Japanese Salad, with Ginger or Wafu (Sesame) Dressing & Optional Tako Su Topping
Contains: Soy, added sugar. Is: Vegetarian/vegan, if you omit the optional octopus (served off to the side to begin with). Gluten-free if you source your soy / tamari sauce accordingly. Or, if you switch to coconut aminos (in which case, … Continue reading
Japanese Vegetarian Hot Soba Soup
Contains: Eggs, soy, almost certainly gluten. Is: Vegetarian, nightshade-free. Soba noodles are buckwheat noodles, but looking at the ingredient package of mine, these also contain wheat (hence, gluten, if you are concerned). I’ve no idea if this is true … Continue reading
Agedashi Tofu
I do minimize the amount of tofu I consume, but this is one dish I really like at Japanese restaurants. Makes a great appetizer! It is sufficient for a light lunch, as well. It comes with two parts – … Continue reading
Dashi Recipes (Japanese broth stock)
I’ll post both a traditional bonito-based dashi and a vegetarian (shiitake mushroom-based) dashi recipe here today. Both are good and serviceable! Plus, cleaning out some old ingredients, I have a combo dashi at the bottom of this post. Dashi has … Continue reading
Onigirazu – Japanese Rice Sandwiches
I discovered this idea quite by accident while surfing around on You Tube, and decided to create my own Onigirazu — basically sushi rice wrapped with a nori sheet to form a pocket, with whatever inside the rice that stirs … Continue reading
