Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Lengua (Tongue) in Mushroom Sauce, Filipino-Inspired
Contains: Offal, dairy. The inspiration recipe for this one is Filipino-based, and is a Lengua in Mushroom Sauce. Although I doubt it is traditional in the Philippines to use canned condensed mushroom soup – but just as everywhere, people do … Continue reading
Ox Tongue Steaks, Japanese Style (from Beef or Bison)
Contains: Offal, soy (legumes). Is: Japanese, gluten-free, with the proper soy sauce, can be Paleo/Whole 30, if using coconut aminos. It has been a while since I’ve posted anything offally-inclined. But here we are, once again, in the waste-not, want-not … Continue reading
Sous Vide Bison Tongue: Low Temperature, Steak Style – Two Recipes
Contains: Nightshades (but you can opt out, and season differently.) Is: Offal, not awful. Paleo, Whole30, gluten-free. This recipe and the follow up preparations will work with beef tongue as well as bison. Being that tongue is naturally … Continue reading
Lamb Tongues with Turnip Greens
Contains: Offal. Is: Paleo, Whole30, potentially nightshade-free. Feel free to skip over my Offal Discussion. I’ve sometimes repeated parts of it, frankly. Honest, the recipe is down there! If you are not interested in lamb tongue, it is unlikely … Continue reading
Slow Cooked Beef Tongue
I’m very much a fan of tongue, and have posted about it once or twice in my career as a blogger. I usually simmer it as Mother did, on the range, but I decided slow-cooking would be a fun way … Continue reading
Cat Got Your Tongue?
One thing I save up old pickle juice for is to make tongue. Dill style, not bread and butter pickle juice. In this case, I saved up my own personally-canned (no sugar added!) dill pickle juice. This is pretty much … Continue reading →
