Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Chili Bowl with Beef and Pinto Beans
Contains: Nightshades, legumes. Is: Gluten-free. Use a steak or meat not meant for long term cooking. Mine was labeled “Beef fajita meat”, and it resembled skirt steak already sliced up when thawed. Flank or flat iron steak would also work … Continue reading
New World Tamales – Vegan: Beans, Squash and Arbol Chilis
Contains: Legumes, nightshades, grains (corn). Is: Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free. For this recipe, and for the turkey tomato tamales, my goal was to make them with pre-Columbian New World ingredients (but using modern methods and modern developments of such ingredients). There … Continue reading
Baked Chicken Thigh with Scalloped Potato, and Canned Plum Tomato

Salmon Tartare (Dad’s Recipe)
Contains: Seafood, nightshades. Is: Paleo, Whole30, gluten-free, if you leave out or modify any crackers, of which I certainly never minded doing. Is: An appetizer. This is perfect for an item in your Feast of the Seven Fishes, an Italian … Continue reading
Bharwaan Mirchee – Stuffed Bell Peppers (Indian)
This recipe is from Indian Home Cooking, by Suvir Saran and Stephanie Lyness. Some years back I attended a 3 hour hands-on cooking class taught by Suvir Saran and bought this book then. (He autographed it, too.) Apparently, it is … Continue reading
Holi, Indian Festival of Colors: Chicken Tikka Masala Whole30 Style
Contains: Coconut, nightshades. Is: Gluten-free, Paleo, Whole 30. Yes, if you prefer to have basmati or jasmine rice instead of cauliflower rice, please go ahead. I made this when I wanted to do one of those Whole 30 … Continue reading →
