Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Braised Denver Cut Lamb Ribs, with Yakiniku or Oyster Sauce, and Cumin
Contains: Soy, wheat, gluten, nightshades (small amount of paprika). Is: Dairy-free. NOTE: If you use oyster sauce, there are shellfish (oysters) in there. Yakiniku sauce (I obtained this online) contains no shellfish or seafood products. Both have the same consistency … Continue reading
Bell Peppers Stuffed with Ground Lamb, Topped with Labne
Contains: Nightshades, dairy. Is: Grain-free, potentially paleo. The lamb came from a local farmer. Labne is a Middle-Eastern / Persian dairy product very similar to yogurt (it has cultures, and probably listens to Mozart when it can). I find this … Continue reading
Chili Bowl with Beef and Pinto Beans
Contains: Nightshades, legumes. Is: Gluten-free. Use a steak or meat not meant for long term cooking. Mine was labeled “Beef fajita meat”, and it resembled skirt steak already sliced up when thawed. Flank or flat iron steak would also work … Continue reading
Peruvian Anticuchos – Beef or Bison Heart
Contains: Offal, nightshades. Is: Easy, gluten-free, paleo, Whole30. The source for this recipe was a video from YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNLJEFweHFs Hearts from pastured animals ARE heart healthy. More discussion at the end of this recipe. The source recipe used beef heart; … Continue reading
Chinese-Seasoned Country Style Pork Ribs
Contains: Soy (a legume), nightshades. Is: Gluten free. One of my favorite cuts of pork – beats out bacon, too. Oh, and these aren’t ribs after all. They are cuts from the shoulder of a porker. If you see any … Continue reading
Chinese-Style Fried Quinoa, with Pork and Egg
Contains: Eggs, nightshades. Is: Gluten-free. There are tasty vegetarian suggestions towards the bottom of the recipe. Not all that many months ago, I posted a Fried Rice blog post. But recently on Cooking Bites, a foodie BBS, I thought about … Continue reading
Mom’s Cheddar Lucy Burger
Contains: Dairy. Is: Quick and easy, gluten-free, keto. Out in the USA Midwest somewhere, there’s been a newish burger, named the Jucy Lucy. It is basically ground beef wrapped around a huge chuck of melt-able cheese, and then pan fried … Continue reading
Paleo Greek-Inspired Lamb Meatballs
Contains: No standard allergens. Is: Gluten-free, grain-free, Whole30, paleo, keto, quick and easy. My last pack of Connecticut-farmed ground lamb, obtained early March 2020. What I like about the recipe is that it doesn’t get injected with breadcrumbs, but also … Continue reading
Bison Bone Marrow on Crumpets, with Garlic, Lemon, and Balsamic Reduction
Contains: Offal, gluten (wheat), dairy? soy? READ LABELS on your crumpets, see below! Is: Quick and easy. Beef marrow is practically identical, substitute this in as available or desired. You can also switch the crumpet(s) out with English muffins (sliced … Continue reading
Slow-Cooker Pork Loin Roast with Tomato, Onion, and BBQ Seasonings
Contains: Nightshades, added sugar (which was in my rub). Is: Gluten-free. Last March, I posted a sous vide recipe for pork loin roast, using an apple-mustard sauce. And then I posted a oven-braised recipe for Mexican pork loin roast in … Continue reading
