Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Eggplant/Aubergine Breakfast Tortilla with Egg, Cabbage, and Sprouts
Contains: Eggs, nightshades, gluten/wheat, dairy. Is: Vegetarian. For this recipe I used wheat tortilla wraps, and I warmed them in the skillet. I have no clue why, but I just can’t get myself to eat and enjoy a COLD wrap … Continue reading
Garlic Shrimp Pecorino with Cabbage
Contains: Shellfish, dairy, optional alcohol. Is: Quick and easy, gluten-free. (Unless you put it over wheat-containing pasta, or farro.) When I dodged into the local small grocers in order to nab some dish detergent, I decided to see what other … Continue reading
Italian Savoy Cabbage and Fontina Rolls
Contains: Dairy. Is: Gluten-free, vegetarian. Recipe from Autentico, page 174, by Rolando Beramendi. An Italian cookbook which truly impresses me. I meant to post a cookie recipe today for the Holidays (there are a lot – Christmas, Chanukah, Solstice, and … Continue reading
Japanese Salad, with Ginger or Wafu (Sesame) Dressing & Optional Tako Su Topping
Contains: Soy, added sugar. Is: Vegetarian/vegan, if you omit the optional octopus (served off to the side to begin with). Gluten-free if you source your soy / tamari sauce accordingly. Or, if you switch to coconut aminos (in which case, … Continue reading
Japanese Vegetarian Hot Soba Soup
Contains: Eggs, soy, almost certainly gluten. Is: Vegetarian, nightshade-free. Soba noodles are buckwheat noodles, but looking at the ingredient package of mine, these also contain wheat (hence, gluten, if you are concerned). I’ve no idea if this is true … Continue reading
Lamb Shoulder Chop with Cabbage, Apple, and Onion
‘Tis the season for all sorts of holidays, and right now if you are Jewish it is Hanukkah. So, I decided to post something that would be Hanukkah friendly (ie, it would be kosher). It also sounds a bit Irish, … Continue reading
Stuffed Delicata Squash, Paleo / Vegetarian Style
What’s good about delicata squash: The skin is edible. It is easy to prepare and there is very little waste. You can go with just about anything (that’s also edible) to stuff it with. No, you don’t … Continue reading
Asian Coleslaw
Another hot-weather dish you don’t need to heat up your kitchen to make! Although finally this week the weather has broke in this burgh. Typically, this will be a side. You will usually find shredded carrot in recipes for Asian … Continue reading
Teriyaki Tempeh Tacos
Tex-Mex fusion with eastern Asia? BTW, this recipe is vegan, and it turned out top notch, speaking as an omnivore. I am looking forward to making this soon again. Very soon. Tempeh originated in Indonesia, most specifically on the island … Continue reading
An Eastern-Asian Soup
I haven’t driven since December 13th (recovering from surgery), and my pantry in my new home is not yet installed, so some of my foodstuffs are not readily find-able. But I was in the mood for a nice winter-body warming … Continue reading
