Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

A Gluten-Free, Dairy Free Vegan Avocado Dressing
Contains: Paprika (nightshade). Is: Gluten-free, dairy-free, no added sugars, quick and easy, Paleo, Whole30, vegetarian, vegan. Going for a truly heart-healthy dressing usable both over salads, or as an addition to tacos. Fats ARE healthy. As with carbs, you have … Continue reading
Fig, Olive and Maple Syrup Sauce (or Glaze)
Contains: No standard allergens. Is: Gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan. Around here it is fresh fig season (which won’t last that much longer, but at lower latitudes you may have more leeway). Although I used this with fish, for vegetarian or … Continue reading
A Seasoning Blend: Bengali Panch Phoron
Contains: No standard allergens. Is: Vegetarian, vegan, paleo, Whole30, quick and easy. This is a quick and easy mix of Bengali spices, that one can use for a number of dishes. All the spices are “whole”, as in the seed … Continue reading
Nuoc Cham – Vietnamese Dipping Sauce
Contains: Seafood, added sugar, nightshades. Is: Spicy, gluten-free. I made this once before, to serve with Vietnamese summer rolls, in a misguided notion that it would work even without sugar. Mistake. Really inedible… I ended up tossing it. I … Continue reading
Japanese Salad, with Ginger or Wafu (Sesame) Dressing & Optional Tako Su Topping
Contains: Soy, added sugar. Is: Vegetarian/vegan, if you omit the optional octopus (served off to the side to begin with). Gluten-free if you source your soy / tamari sauce accordingly. Or, if you switch to coconut aminos (in which case, … Continue reading
Mardi Gras: Creole Seasoning
Contains: Nightshades. Is: Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, Paleo, Whole 30. All recipe credit belongs to Immaculate Bites (photos and commentary are mine): Afro-Caribbean Recipes Made Easy. I love the discussion there about Creole and Cajun seasonings, too. Apparently Creole is just … Continue reading
Ras al Hanout Moroccan Seasoning
This weekend, I am making a Moroccan leg of lamb for a pot-luck gathering here, with a low and slow braise. It’s a Mediterranean theme pot-luck. In advance, I’m making the Ras al Hanout seasoning I wish to use for … Continue reading
Cinco de Mayo: Cilantro/Lime/Avocado Taco Dressing
I’m feeding 14-16 people tomorrow for Cinco de Mayo, and I hope to have a more intensive recipe to show for it next week… I’m not finishing off most of these recipes until I’m just about to serve them, and … Continue reading
Dashi Recipes (Japanese broth stock)
I’ll post both a traditional bonito-based dashi and a vegetarian (shiitake mushroom-based) dashi recipe here today. Both are good and serviceable! Plus, cleaning out some old ingredients, I have a combo dashi at the bottom of this post. Dashi has … Continue reading
Kashmiri Masala/Curry Paste
Here’s the Kashmiri Curry Paste recipe I used for the Khatta Meat I posted the other day. The recipe is adapted from The Curry Guy’s recipe. My main adaptation was to change “vegetable oil” to “grapeseed oil”, because it … Continue reading
