Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Goan Fish Curry
Contains: Seafood (fish), coconut, nightshades. Is: Gluten-free, Whole30, paleo, quick and easy. Fish specific to the waters of Goa, India, would be preferred, but as this isn’t always possible (including where I live), any decent white fish of a bit … Continue reading
Vegetarian Bengali Inspired Bitter Melon Dish (with Panch Phoron)
Contains: Nightshades, legumes, dairy. Is: Vegetarian, gluten-free. I snagged a bitter melon on my last venture to Connecticut, where I picked up a healthy-looking bitter melon. This vegetable really does live up to its name – very, very bitter. But … Continue reading
Indian Curry: Okra, Mushroom, Tomato, Onion
Contains: Nightshades. Is: Vegetarian, vegan, Paleo, Whole30. I’ve been wanting to do a vegetarian Indian okra and mushroom dish for awhile. Everything else was here to hand, just needed the inspiration towards putting this all together. Will be getting … Continue reading
Vegetarian Indian-Inspired Rice; Plus Eggplant (Aubergine), Bitter Melon & Okra Curry
Since there are a lot of meat-related dishes on my docket right now, I wanted to create something vegetarian that I’ve never made before. Meanwhile, I was having a severe hankering for things Indian, and haven’t yet tracked down the … Continue reading
Paleo Battered Okra, with Coconut Flakes
Usually, I can’t seem to find quality okra in most supermarkets… it is a food for a distinct audience, which doesn’t seem to include my New England environment. But I do find it in East Asian and in Indian groceries, … Continue reading
Mardi Gras Creole: Mussels, Andouille, Okra, Rice
For Mardi Gras (February 13, 2018). So many seasonal times up-and-coming! And my computer being on the fritz hasn’t helped much… yesterday’s Valentine’s salad was supposed to be posted this past Tuesday, and today’s Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) post … Continue reading
Okra, Mushroom, Tomato, Onion, Kashmiri Masala
The inspiration for this dish was Indian — but having come home from surgery earlier that day, I didn’t have the stamina to go whole-barrel on this one. In fact, I’d prepped the okra the day before. Kashmiri paste /masala … Continue reading
Okra, Mediterranean Style
Okay, I LOVE okra. I got a pound of it at my farmer’ market ten days ago, and another pound this past weekend. This stuff is FRESH! It will last a lot better and longer than the okra I see … Continue reading
Okra, Tomato, Mushroom, Onion… Vegetarian & Indian Savory Style
Because the okra, the paste tomatoes, the mushrooms and that onion were looking at me accusingly, and the okra was reminding me I bought them nine days ago. Because one should be creative when facing one’s fridge, and that veggie doomsday … Continue reading
Chicken Hearts and Palm / Chicken Gizzards, Tomato, Mushroom and Okra
We grew up with my parents buying whole chickens from the grocery, and these birds would come with livers, hearts and gizzards. My favorite little morsel was the heart. It was a treat to find it in whatever dish Mom … Continue reading
