Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Braised Denver Cut Lamb Ribs, with Yakiniku or Oyster Sauce, and Cumin
Contains: Soy, wheat, gluten, nightshades (small amount of paprika). Is: Dairy-free. NOTE: If you use oyster sauce, there are shellfish (oysters) in there. Yakiniku sauce (I obtained this online) contains no shellfish or seafood products. Both have the same consistency … Continue reading
A Vegetarian Breakfast “Quesadilla”
Contains: Dairy, wheat, gluten, potentially nightshades. Is: Quick and easy, vegetarian. A quick one-off breakfast from yesterday. It isn’t even particularly Tex-Mex, but at least this has queso (cheese). And for this I had Mexican cheese in the fridge… Another … Continue reading
Clams ‘n’ Pasta
Contains: Shellfish, wheat, gluten, dairy, nightshades. Is: An effort to return to food blogging! Happy New Year I’ve been absent for a while, which wasn’t intended. My mind wasn’t on cooking all that much [- oh, I cooked, but nothing … Continue reading
Bell Peppers Stuffed with Ground Lamb, Topped with Labne
Contains: Nightshades, dairy. Is: Grain-free, potentially paleo. The lamb came from a local farmer. Labne is a Middle-Eastern / Persian dairy product very similar to yogurt (it has cultures, and probably listens to Mozart when it can). I find this … Continue reading
Shrimp Filling for Tamales
Contains: Shellfish (shrimp). Is: Gluten-free, Paleo, if by itself. A while back, I made and posted about two tamale recipes. I won’t today post the making of the masa that surrounds the filling. We were doing a tamale making party … Continue reading
Savory Avocado Smoothie with Blood Orange, Spinach, Scallion, Cilantro
Contains: No major allergens. Is: Quick and easy, raw, vegetarian, vegan. I have always preferred savory over sweet – this thick beverage is a feature of this. You really do need the cilantro/coriander leaf in this one, or otherwise the … Continue reading
Steamed Scallop Wontons
Contains: Shellfish (scallops, oyster), gluten. Is: Quick and easy. This recipe is designed for #FishFridayFoodies. Theme this month is “Small Bites”. You will find the links to other creators in this challenge at the end of this post. You can … Continue reading
Stuffed Eggplant/Aubergine: Farro, Mushroom, Shallot, Celery, with Shawarma Yogurt Topping
Contains: Nightshades, dairy or coconut. Is: Vegetarian, can easily be made vegan / dairy-free. By the way: Eggplant = Aubergine; Yogurt = Yoghurt. For the yogurt topping, you can use low or full fat dairy, or use coconut yogurt – … Continue reading
Vegetarian Breakfast Wrap: with Brussels Sprouts, Red Onion, Spinach, Egg and Cheese
Contains: Egg, wheat, gluten, dairy, nightshades. Is: Quick and easy, vegetarian. Apologies for missing some of the posts I want to make recently. I twisted my ankle which has meant I don’t want to stand there and make some of … Continue reading
Hearts of Palm, Cabbage and Avocado Salad
Contains: Nightshades. Is: Quick and easy, gluten-free, vegetarian, paleo, Whole30. This recipe is inspired by something found from Food and Wine, although I’ve changed the dressing. I also added cabbage, and diddled with concentrations. The Inspiration Recipe is HERE. I … Continue reading
