Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Baby Cuttlefish with Farro, Tomato, Marinated Eggplant, Mushrooms, and Olives
Contains: Shellfish (cephalopods), gluten, wheat, nightshades. Just enjoyed watching a storm roll in, thunder, lightning, a lovely breeze, temperatures dropping ten degrees. Nibbled on wild blackberries. Noted the wild turkeys in the front yard slowly and nonchalantly cross the yard … Continue reading
Fig, Olive and Maple Syrup Sauce (or Glaze)
Contains: No standard allergens. Is: Gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan. Around here it is fresh fig season (which won’t last that much longer, but at lower latitudes you may have more leeway). Although I used this with fish, for vegetarian or … Continue reading
Almond-Breaded Tapenade-Stuffed Trout, with a Mushroom Sauce
Contains: Seafood (fish), tree nuts (almonds). Is: Gluten-free, nightshade-free, paleo. This recipe is inspired by Jacques Pépin, from his book, Poulets & Légumes: My Favorite Chicken and Vegetable Recipes. Although he stuffed chicken breasts, I used trout. So, to be … Continue reading
Onion and Olive Frittata
Contains: Dairy, eggs, nightshades (pimentos). Is: Gluten-free. Makes for a fine brunch. Adapted from Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street, 2017 (September-October, page 10), which in turn comes from Deborah Madison. My changes are in halving the recipe and, well, adding olives. … Continue reading
Greek Omelet with Spinach and Olives
Contains: Eggs, dairy. Is: Quick and easy, simple vegetarian option, nightshade-free. The Second Recipe of a personal Greek Month. You can eat this by itself, or have a side of toasted pita and/or Greek salad. See the previous recipe … Continue reading
Greek Bronzini Skillet Dish – Whole30
Contains: Fish, nightshades. Is: Paleo, Whole30, quick and easy. #FishFridayFoodies. Another recipe for Whole30 month. It’s also intended for Fish Friday Foodies, which has a theme of Mediterranean seafood dishes this month. Since I’ve been wanting to do Greek … Continue reading
Squid with Olives and Tomato Sauce- A Greek Lenten Dish
I’m a sucker for (nearly) anything seafood. (I really have yet to try salt cod, and I’ll pass on the Japanese fugu and the live Korean octopus — speaking of suckers, thank you.) I know when growing up I was … Continue reading
Young Steamed Octopus
The recipe: Each 0.75 pound octopus serves one person as a main dish. The frozen packages I find in one of my supermarkets contain two each of these. I’m writing the recipe up as per one octopus – scale up accordingly. … Continue reading
Eel…. and Olive.
I had over 2/3rd of an eel left over from Christmas Eve; decided to figure out something fun to do with it, with sort of a Mediterranean flair. So here we go: 2/3rd eel (or the full thing if you … Continue reading
