Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Chili Bowl with Beef and Pinto Beans
Contains: Nightshades, legumes. Is: Gluten-free. Use a steak or meat not meant for long term cooking. Mine was labeled “Beef fajita meat”, and it resembled skirt steak already sliced up when thawed. Flank or flat iron steak would also work … Continue reading
Dining Out: Casa Oaxaca, Bethel, CT 06801
If you have been here for awhile, you may have noticed there haven’t been any “Dining Out” reviews for a year and a half now. And this post is a representation of the second time I’ve gotten down to my … Continue reading
Pork Tacos and Veggies in Soft Corn Tortillas – Leftover Pork Shoulder Roast
Contains: Nightshades, grains. Is: Mexican-inspired, gluten-free, working with leftovers. For this recipe, I used leftover pork from the Pork Shoulder Roast with Pumpkin, Peppers and Onion recipe I posted yesterday. I cooked portions of the leftovers further, for shredding-into-taco purposes. … Continue reading
Soft Corn Tacos with Scallions, Pepper Jack, Avocado, Microgreens
Contains: Dairy. Is: Vegetarian, gluten-free, quick and easy. Well, earlier today I posted an omnivore taco, and now I am making a vegetarian one. Photos here are more step by step (probably because I was less hungry, ya’think???) As always, … Continue reading
Soft Corn Tacos with Ground Bison, Pepper Jack, Ramps, and Microgreens
Contains: Dairy, nightshades (seasoning). Is: Gluten-free, quick and easy. What is rather sad on a small-scale level these days (considering there are a lot of much larger-scale sadnesses going on) is that at taco bars the cheese to sprinkle … Continue reading
Cinco de Mayo: Tex-Mex Style Vegetarian, Grain-Free Stuffed Peppers (feat. Black Beans)
Contains: Legumes, nightshades, dairy. Is: Vegetarian, gluten-free, grain-free. Yes, my stuffing of choice is based around legumes, specifically black beans. Which are my favorite “hard” legume of all. For a bean challenge at CookingBites, I have decided to make … Continue reading
Arrachera Mex-Tex Beef
Think of this as the meat you put into your fajitas, although you can do other things with your preparation. Arracheras are nearly always made from skirt steak, and it is marinated up to three days before grilling, although 24 … Continue reading
