Blasts from the Past
Of Goats and Greens
A blog for food and cookery and discussions of weird things like nutrition, restaurant excursions, growing food in my own garden, DIY, and farmsteading/homesteading. But, mostly food. Mostly harmless...
I definitely steer to a preference for Real Food. (Would someone's great-grandparent somewhere have recognized that item as food?) Otherwise, I'm an omnivore who travels the world (gustatorially). Yes, I also make use of "odd bits". No, I don't bake desserts much -- I really don't have much of a "sweet-tooth". Nearly all of my recipes in recent years are gluten-free. And other than coconut, my recent and future recipes are tree-nut free, as I have digestive issues with those. There's a strong Paleo influence here.
I try to post recipes every Friday, with potential supplemental posts on Tuesdays.
Please leave me comments! Interacting with folk drives me forward!

Vietnamese-Style Summer Rolls with Smoked Salmon and Additions (Gỏi Cuốn)
Contains: Seafood, potential legumes. Is: Gluten-free, soy-free if without most typical dips, finger food. The dip I used contained soy, from a legume, although I don’t specify a dip for you to use in the recipe proper. There are many … Continue reading
Dining Out: IKEA, New Haven, CT
Yes, I know, Ikea has meatballs and a bunch of other food items in their cafeteria. I’m very very picky about meatballs, and I’d say none of the other menu reached out and grabbed me, either, but I will say … Continue reading
Feast of the Seven Fishes, 2016: Featuring Eel and Smelts
Last year I had a truncated feast – I think it was four fishes. This year I had all seven. And while this is an Italian Christmas Eve tradition, one has no need to stay with Italian methods of preparation. (Or … Continue reading
Salad: Lettuce, Cabbage, Hearts of Palm, Endive, Smoked Salmon, Eggs, Tomato, Basil
I was going to bring a tossed salad to a small pot luck I attended on Saturday — but suddenly remembering there was some frozen smoked salmon from Costco in the fridge, and that I’d bought endives, I decided I … Continue reading
Avocado, Smoked Salmon, Capers
I’m currently working on my computer from the dining nook table, and when I look up, this is the view I see. My back yard, turning lush and green, a couple of maple branches hanging down, and a hillside of … Continue reading
Lettuce and Wild Smoked Salmon Rollups
I do have some catching-up to do. At any rate, I took this appetizer to a BBQ party a couple weeks ago. It was simple, and well-appreciated. Lettuce, small leaf Wild smoked salmon — I believe sockeye Cream cheese/soft goat … Continue reading
Of Wild Smoked Salmon and Cucumber
I was toying with bringing something along the lines of the next appetizer I made to a party I attended last night (although the hosts were supplying most of the food). However, I spent most of the afternoon at work … Continue reading
